thin-skinned and thick-necked, your
insatiable passions sucked me dry
I dismantled my body to edify yours
with a skilled hand
I sewed you together, unraveled my veins
to give you those threads you sorely needed
your calloused fingers on my wrist strings
up and down the frets I had marked for you
red no longer, but a pale iridescent shade
reminiscent of the moon you promised me

and you said I was beautiful
but the light was in your eyes

I was always quick to believe
the lies you spun into fairy tales
the desperate promises you swore
with stars in your eyes
we worked together to create two
matching paper mache hearts
to replace the ones we had lost
that ceased beating before our destinies
tangled, enmeshing curls and hopes
you kissed my scars, called them your own
back when we both believed in dreams
and created one bohemian fantasy
all our own

but we can't get there from here
I'm not sure we can get there at all.
"We buried our love in the wintery grave
a lump in the snow was all that remained
but we stayed by its side,
as the days turned to weeks
and the ice kept getting thinner
with every word that we'd speak

when the spring arrived,
we were taken by surprise
when the flows under our feet bled into the sea
and nothing was left for you and me."

"I dismantled my body to edify yours"

startling and raw. rasping, even.
poetry to describe a poem, anyone?
